Meditation Pillow Instructions

Please check out my YouTube Channel for additional details on how I put this together, @LowKeySewist.

I wanted to create a meditation pillow that I can stuff on my own and have pillow cases galore.  See below for what I did.

I first started off creating my pattern pieces.  For the top/bottom of the pillow, I did a half moon to cut it on the fold.  The half-moon piece measures 9.5″ (this is the radius) x18.5″ (this is the length).  You’ll want to cut 2 of this.  Each should be cut on the fold.  The green arrow is pointing to where you should cut on fold.

Or you can open it out and cut two.

The side pattern piece is 16″ (width) x 28″ (length).   Cut one of this piece on the fold.

The red arrow is pointing to the area that should be cut on fold.

Once I had my fabric cut, I sewed the top piece to the side piece, right sides facing.

Then I started sewing the bottom piece to the side piece, but only sewed about halfway.  Since my zipper was pretty long, I wanted to make sure I had enough space to sew it all the way on.

To sew the zipper, I first had to pin it to one section of the opening.  Again, I did right sides facing.  Then I used a zipper foot and sewed the one side of the zipper.  Once done, I pinned the other side of the zipper to the other part of the opening.  Making sure it was still right sides facing.  Then I sewed it on.

I ended up having a little more space in the opening that needed to be sewn.  I made sure that the zipper was open and then I sewed the remaining space closed.  Once everything was sew on the inside of the pillow, I turned it right sides out.

I first stuffed it with some beans from BeanProducts.com.  Then I added a bunch of PolyFil.  When it was mostly filled, I finished off with more beans.  And then zipped it closed.

Ingredients

  • Tissue paper for pattern
  • Ticking Fabric
  • A really big zipper (color is dealer’s choice)
  • Thread to match
  • PolyFil or Beans, or both

Steps

  1. Using the dimensions above, sketch out on the tissue paper for future use.
  2. You can also use a Tailor Pencil and draw directly if you don’t want to make more than one.
  3. Cut pattern.
  4. Place pattern on fabric and cut fabric in the pattern shapes.
  5. Sew the Top piece to the Side piece all the way around.
  6. Sew the Bottom piece to the Side Piece, about halfway around.
  7. Pin the zipper, right sides facing, to one part of the remaining opening.
  8. Sew that side of the zipper on.
  9. Do the same for the other side of the opening.
  10. If there is excess opening, make sure to sew that close (don’t forget to leave your zipper area open so you can turn it right sides out!).
  11. Once done, stuff with PolyFill or Beans, or both.
  12. Zip it up and you’re done!
