I recently came up with a story idea (as in today recently) and decided that I’ll probably post it on my Blog as a short story series. I’m not sure when that will start to appear as I haven’t really started writing it yet. Its in its infancy stages of initial research and development. But when I do start posting it, I’ll make sure to include something about it in the Newsletter.
That being said, I’m not just a layperson who has ideas of “being a writer”. I am a writer. Have been since I was probably about 4 or 5. I was writing stories and journaling all the way up through high school. Even won an honorable mention for one of my short stories in my senior year. Then I went to Columbia College Chicago, one of like two schools in the entire country where you can get just a Writing degree. Specifically, my degree was a Bachelor of Arts in Fiction Writing. (I also have a Project Management cert that I did when I was working at my previous employer. And have designs to go back to school in some format to get more certificates in JavaScript and other technical works).
No longer having the regular work that I did for the past 20 years, I’m finally getting back to my true life’s goal and passion. The cosplay and crafting is definitely a great way to stay creative and be active in many different communities, but writing is a different level. Its not just the creation. It’s the time spent with characters. It’s the waking up in the middle of the night and having an “aha!” moment when a scene has been in the making. It’s the nose to the grindstone of typing for extended periods of time to just get it all out.
There’s truly nothing like it.
Maybe like a runners high, but I’ve never had one, so I can’t say for certain. Anyone who is an inherent writer understands what I mean.
But I’ve been cutting myself off and neglecting that part of me for so long, its taking a bit to get back on that bicycle. Basically since the week of my notice of being laid off, I’ve been writing just about every day again. I used to handwrite in journals (and I still do on occasion), but carpal tunnel is not a friend to writers and my wrist and hand grow tired after just a couple of pages. Typing is my main form of getting the words on the page now. In fact, almost all of my first drafts of stories have been pen to paper. I do still handwrite plenty of words, just not my journals as much. I’m thankful for an era where I can type all my words and be able to compile them into one place. Even if it was a typewriter, its still better (and safer) to be able to type. I need to save my wrists for as long as I can. Its one of the other reasons I don’t crochet as much as I used to. Even knitting has toned down quite a bit.
In any case, dear reader, be on the lookout for one day there shall be a story series here. I don’t want to get too many hopes up, but I’m excited for it!
